Following on from our Amelia Earhart week we were very excited to have another visitor come to our school! Year 1 were visited by Mr Vaughan who brought in his model aeroplane that was an Electra just like the one that Amelia flew across the Atlantic! Mr Vaughan is very knowledgeable about planes and was very impressed with how much the children could remember about aviation and Amelia Earhart! He even brought in a real flying jacket from the 1930s!
Mr Vaughan showed the children how the plane worked just like a real plane and they were able to see how the rudder, ailerons and elevators moved and controlled the plane. Unfortunately it was too windy to go on a flight but we did turn the engine on to feel the power. We carefully lifted the plane and got ready to start the engine, however the children had to say something really important first; " Contact, Ignition, Chocks Away!" Then whoosh! We started the engine and the propeller went so fast that it made wind go all around the classroom and even blew down some of our displays!
It was great fun and we would like to say a huge thank you to Mr Vaughan for bringing in his plane for us! Maybe in the summer we can take it for a flight.
